The Ninth Gate (2000)

Okay, so I am a little behind on the reviews here but last week i checked out 'The Ninth Gate' for one great reason, Johnny Depp. I love Depp and most movies that he is involved in so even though I wasn't sure of the premise of the movie I was willing to give this one a go!

The plot is a little complicated to explain as it is one of those that the story keeps twisting and turning and changing around. Johnny Depp plays a book collector and a bit of a con man, making sure he gets the rarest books for the best prices. Its based around one book called the ninth gate which there are only three copies of but only one of which he is told is real. He sets out to find the other two ninth gate books after been offered a lot of money from a very rich book collector who owns one of the ninth gate copies with the high desire to find the other two compare them and see which is the real copy.

The ninth gate is a book all about the devil and worship of the devil so the movie gets very supernatural, slightly confusing at parts. Being a collector myself it was interesting to watch a movie based around people who very avidly collect something however I found some parts of the movie very slow and maybe didn't need to be in there. Some scenes were really exciting and you would want to keep watching and then it would drop back down in pace and slight feel of disappointment would remain. I also felt the run time was too long at 2 hours and 13 minuets for this movie just seemed way to long, so if you didn't find these type of themes interesting in any way I think it would be a hard movie to sit through.

Johnny Depp does an okay job in this movie but nothing that really stood out, he has defiantly been better. If your going to watch this movie just for him he is okay but far from amazing. Overall I wouldn't watch it again and wouldn't recommend unless you are a massive Depp fan or very interested in supernatural devil themed movies.

2 out of 5 stars
